The Netherlands will allow the setting off of fireworks on New Year’s Eve for the final time this year in most municipalities, ahead of a nationwide ban that will take effect next year 2026.
Long queues have formed at outlets licensed to sell fireworks, while emergency services are preparing for a potentially busy night. Authorities expect a rise in firework-related injuries and incidents involving public disorder, similar to previous years.
Radar data shows that birds leave urban areas en masse several hours before fireworks begin.
Animal welfare groups have also warned of the impact on pets, noting that loud explosions can cause significant stress to dogs and cats.
